Spring Break 2018-Our Nation's Capital

Brent and I took the girls to Washington D.C. for spring break.  We had a fabulous time!  The girls have both studied American symbols and some history at school and they really enjoyed seeing what they've learned firsthand.

We left early Saturday morning and hit the ground running.  We rented a car and drove straight to Mt. Vernon.  We had a nice lunch at the Mt. Vernon Inn.
The girls couldn't wait to see George Washington's teeth.  However, Abby decided they were "really gross" in person and opted out of the pic.  Caroline went with it!

We stayed at the AKA White House right around the corner from the White House.  It was like an apartment and we loved having the space.  The girls had fun all week in the spinning chair.
The next morning, we were off to Arlington National Cemetary.
 The Eternal Flame

Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Lee House- Pierre L'Enfant's Grave- Abby was determined not to miss this stop.  She wrote a biography about Pierre L'Enfant, The Father of Washington D.C.

We saw the Iwo Jima Memorial on our way to return our car.
Next, we headed to the National Museum of Natural History.
 Picnic Lunch

 The Hope Diamond
The minerals and gems were a favorite exhibit in this museum.

Brent took Caroline in the live butterfly exhibit while Abby did some shopping.

The blue butterflies were her favorite.

We ate yummy Mexican food at Rosa Mexicano.

Exploring and shopping in China Town.
Monuments by Moonlight Tour- We had our own golf cart! Our guide, Sophia, taught us a lot!

She gave us sparkling cider to drink on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The next morning, we had a delicious breakfast at Lincoln's Waffle Shop.

 We popped in Trump Hotel.

We went to the top of the clock tower here for a spectacular view of the city.
National Museum of American History- Brent and I really enjoyed this museum.  It had many artifacts from our childhood.  This case had Oscar the Grouch and Mr. Roger's sweater in it.
 The Batmobile
The girls were excited to see Bill Nye the Science Guy's lab coat.

I think we all agreed the most amazing things we saw were Abe Lincoln's hat(above), George Washington's uniform and the actual flag Francis Scott Key saw when he wrote the Star Spangled Banner.  Pictures were not permitted of the flag.

 The First Barbie

The National Museum of Air and Space was next on the agenda.

 The Wright Brothers' Plane
 Amelia Earhart's Plane

Tuesday, we were thrilled to be going on a White House Tour!  As we waited in the security line, Marine One landed on the lawn.

The girls were excited to see Abigail Adam's coffee urn in the green room.  Abby wrote a report on her in first grade.
The annual White House Christmas Tree is put in the center of this room every year.  The chandelier is taken down.

Our Last Day- We walked to some monuments and memorials we hadn't seen, shopped at Union Station and ate at Founding Farmers and Carmine's.  It was a nice way to end the trip!

Riding The Metro was exciting for the girls.  This trip was perfect for our family!  It was educational and fun!  Washington D.C. definitely got a good review in our book!
