Battleship Texas

We headed to Spring Memorial Day Weekend and visited Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto Monument with GiGi and PawPaw.  This battleship is one of only seven remaining ships and the only remaining capital ship to have served in both World Wars.  I love when we can squeeze in some history on any trip!

Abby and Caroline had never been on a battleship.  Abby was especially excited for this trip as she learned quite a bit of Texas history in school this past year.

During World War II, the German coastal defense hit the ship twice.  The first shell exploded, injuring twelve and killing one.  This was the only combat fatality ever aboard Battleship Texas.  The second shell did not explode and was nicknamed the "lucky shell."  We were excited when we found it on display.

After exploring the ship, we found the spot where Santa Anna surrendered and visited the San Jacinto museum and monument.

We were ready for some seafood at Monument Inn after our Texas history field trip!
